Fortification means adding essential micronutrients to a staple food during processing. In Kenya, maize meal fortification is a national public-health standard, and it is one of the most efficient ways to reach families with nutrients they may otherwise miss.
What is added to fortified maize flour?
- Iron — supports healthy blood and reduces the risk of anaemia.
- Zinc — supports immunity and childhood growth.
- Folic acid and B vitamins — support energy metabolism and healthy pregnancies.
- Vitamin A — supports vision and immune function.
Why staples are the right vehicle
Ugali and uji are eaten most days in most Kenyan homes. Adding nutrients at the mill means the benefit reaches the household automatically, with no change in cooking, taste or price behaviour.
How we do it at Nice Extra Premium
We mill, fortify and pack at our own facility in Mwea, Kirinyaga County. Controlling the full chain means the dosing is consistent from one bag to the next, and every batch is checked before it leaves the plant.
Common questions
Does fortification change the taste of flour?
No. The micronutrients are added in very small quantities and do not affect the taste, colour or cooking behaviour of the flour.
Is Nice Extra Premium maize flour fortified?
Yes. Every batch is Grade 1 sifted and fortified with essential vitamins and minerals in line with Kenyan food fortification standards.
